Swedish Customs Authority Adopts Peppol Invoicing Standard

The Swedish Customs Authority (Tullverket) has announced that, on March 1, 2025, it has adopted the Peppol BIS Billing 3 format for invoicing customs, taxes, and fees. This new system is replacing the previous format, marking a significant shift towards modernizing Sweden’s invoicing infrastructure.
What Does This Mean for Customers?
Customers who have been receiving invoices via EDI need to take action to continue receiving invoices automatically. The required steps include:
- Connecting to the Peppol Network: Customers need to partner with a Peppol-accredited service provider, such as Comarch, to receive electronic invoices.
- Registering Peppol ID: Since March 3, 2025, customers are required to register their Peppol ID with the Swedish Customs Authority via the e-services section on their website.
While the transition to Peppol invoices is underway, the Swedish Customs Authority will still offer customs bills in PDF format through its website for those who prefer or require an alternative.
Global Adoption of Peppol
The Swedish adoption of Peppol follows a growing trend across various countries, including Belgium, the UAE, and France, who have all incorporated the Peppol Network as part of their electronic invoicing mandates. This move aims to enhance the efficiency and interoperability of invoicing systems globally.
