E-invoicing in Australia

In Australia, B2B and B2G e-invoicing is still voluntary. One of the obligation concerning transaction with public entitis is that they must be able handle the receipt of e-invoices when the supplier chooses to send them this way.

The Australian government also intends to introduce business-to-business e-invoicing, which will be implemented in several stages depending on the size of the company. Three phases have been proposed:

  • From July 1, 2023, companies will be able to request large contractors to send invoices electronically via the PEPPOL network. This means that large companies will be required to send electronic invoices in the PEPPOL format on request.
  • From July 1, 2024, companies will be able to request medium-sized contractors to send invoices electronically via the PEPPOL network. This means that medium-sized companies will be obliged from this date to send electronic invoices in the PEPPOL format on request.
  • From July 1, 2025, all companies will be required to exchange electronic invoices in the PEPPOL format.

E-invoicing in New Zealand

In terms of B2G invoicing, central government agencies have been obliged to be able to receive and process e-invoices since March 2022, if their suppliers wish to send such documents in these formats. In other words, one of the obligations regarding transactions with public entities is that they must be able to handle the receipt of e-invoices. The government estimates that, by the end of 2026, 90% of all invoices issued to the central government in New Zealand will be in electronic form.
