Diabetes was recognized as the 21st century civilization disease and is often referred to as the first non-infectious epidemic in the world. Its development is mainly influenced by economic progress and urbanization, which lead to changes in lifestyle, reduced physical activity and inadequate diet. Surplus sugar damages blood vessels, leading to the development of so-called late diabetic complications which affect the most important organs – heart, blood vessels, kidneys and eyes.
